Anne M. Fortin art therapy

Anne M. Fortin, MA, DVATI, PCAT

Welcome, I'm Anne
I'm a professional art therapist, a member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA), and a practicing visual artist. Originally from Montreal, I now reside in Victoria, BC, where I provide art therapy services to individuals, child-parent dyads, and groups.
My therapeutic approach is integrative and rooted in the postmodern paradigm—one that values diversity and acknowledges that no single method can encompass the complexity of human experience. I believe that each person is unique, and therefore, every therapeutic journey should be as well.
Whether you're navigating personal challenges or seeking creative self-discovery, I tailor therapeutic work to support your needs and meet you where you are on your creative self-exploration.

Anne

My lifelong relationship with art-making has grown into a strong desire to understand the creative process—how it helps shape social fabric and connect us to ourselves and others. With over 25 years of experience in the arts as an artist, researcher, and educator, I have often turned to art-making during emotionally charged times—grief, anxiety, and personal transitions. These lived experiences heightened my awareness of art’s therapeutic potential and guided me toward the field of art therapy. Since becoming an art therapist, I’ve worked with a range of populations in various settings, including treatment centers, schools, outpatient wellness programs, and elder care facilities. In my private practice based in Victoria, BC, I offer art therapy for individuals, seniors, child-parent dyads, and groups.

MY THERAPEUTIC APPROACH

I use an integrative approach to art therapy, which honors the diversity of human experience. I tailor my practice to meet each client where they are, offering therapeutic expression modalities that reflect their unique needs and goals.

I incorporate a wide range of materials and techniques, including bilateral drawing, painting, clay work, assemblage, found objects, performance, ritual, poetry, journaling, and storytelling.

My work is informed by

  • Contemporary psychodynamic theory (Object relations theory and Attachment theory

  • Sensorimotor and body-focused approaches

  • Trauma-informed care

PHILOSOPHY

Rooted in a creative theory framework, my practice draws on the concept of poiesis—the act of making, creating, and bringing into being. I believe that creative self-expression is an innate and fundamental human ability, one that connects us to the core of our being. Art-making acts as a transformative force, sparking change, cultivating empathy, and supporting personal growth. Ultimately, I see art-making within a therapeutic context as a pathway to a more fulfilling life.

Art therapy

Art therapy is a therapeutic process that combines artistic expression with models of counselling and psychotherapy.
At its core, art therapy is a collaborative process built on a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship. Through shared aesthetic, sensory, and imaginative experiences, therapist and client work together to explore, create, and reflect. This space encourages the development of new perspectives, taps into inner knowing, and provides deeper self-understanding.
By engaging with the artwork and the creative process, clients improve emotional regulation and gain insights into how they make sense of life events, relationships, and their emotional and mental health.
Art-making expands expression beyond words. Many of our most profound experiences—such as early attachment, trauma, or preverbal memories—may not be easily articulated. Art therapy offers a way to safely explore these experiences through imagination, metaphor, and sensorimotor engagement.
While art therapy can be especially beneficial for children or those who find verbal expression difficult, it is a powerful modality for people of all ages. No artistic skill or experience is necessary—just a willingness to explore.
Art therapy is a gentle and sensitive approach that invites individuals to venture into the unknown, reconnect with themselves and others, and reframe or transform their life stories.
